ABOUT
About Alex Lew

I bring executive leadership to AI strategy, risk and finance.

I set strategy that connects AI, governance, risk and finance with commercial results. My record includes 20% year-on-year teleconsultation revenue growth and an ML-driven credit engine that cut default rates by more than 80%. As Chief Product Officer at a digital-health company, I lead a 20+ person organisation and its enterprise AI programme. I set approval gates and stop or defer proposals without a clear owner, business case or necessary safeguards. I also lead ISO/IEC 42001 readiness and led the company’s first ISO 27001 certification with in-house preparation. Earlier, I owned fintech strategy and P&L at GeTS/CrimsonLogic and led its MAS Digital Wholesale Bank licence application within the Zall-Marubeni consortium, reaching final assessment. At UOB, I developed an ASEAN strategic plan and an investment framework. As a CFA charterholder and former Group Data Protection Officer, I bring financial discipline and governance experience to AI governance and PDPA work for Singapore SMEs outside healthcare.

I have been responsible for the decisions

I am Chief Product Officer at a digital-health company, leading a product, engineering, design, data and delivery organisation of more than 20 people. I lead its enterprise AI programme and personally design and build agent skills and workflows.

That work includes issuing mandatory AI operating controls: approved environments, sensitive data rules, read-only infrastructure connectors, human execution and live maker-checker review. I have set approval gates for configuration changes, agent access and protected workflows.

One example is a courier-order workflow. I specified a human approval gate before an agent could confirm an order, with an audit trail for write actions. The question was not just whether the agent could complete the task, but whether it should have permission to commit the business.

I lead ISO/IEC 42001 readiness work covering risk and impact assessments, system inventories, lifecycle controls and audit evidence. I also led the company's first ISO 27001 certification with in-house preparation, and directed insurer security-assurance and remediation work.

Data protection has meant saying no

I'm a former Group Data Protection Officer, and in that role I reviewed third-party processing and data integrations.

In one transfer review, I withheld approval until contractual, consent, encryption, access-control and breach-notification safeguards were in place. A checklist is useful only if someone is prepared to stop the transfer when the answers are not good enough.

That was an appointed role. My service here is different: you appoint your own DPO, and I support them.

Models suggest. People still own the nod.

Governance lives in permissions, approvals and escalation routes, not only in the PDF. I want the person responsible for a decision to know what they are approving, what evidence they have and when to stop.

When you engage me, you work directly with me. I do not hand the work to junior staff. I personally review and sign off every deliverable.

AI helps with the draft. I own the sign-off.

Writing

I write Governed by Design on Substack in English, and also write in Chinese on Douban.
